The Houses That Shape Marriage

Quick answer

The 7th house is the primary house of marriage and the spouse, supported by the 2nd (family life), 5th (love and children), 8th (intimacy, longevity of the bond and in-law matters) and 12th (private life and the bed). Reading them together — with their lords and the Navamsa chart — gives a far more accurate picture than the 7th house alone. Upapada Lagna adds a second, independent view of the marriage in Jaimini astrology.

Marriage is never contained in a single house. The 7th house describes the partnership, but the surrounding houses describe the daily life inside it — money, children, intimacy, and privacy.

The articles below take each marriage-related house in turn and explain what it genuinely indicates.

The houses that decide a marriage

Marriage is not read from one house. Six of them contribute, and each answers a different question.

HouseWhat it governs in marriage
1stYourself — temperament, health, how you show up in a relationship
2ndFamily life, accumulated wealth, speech within the household, the joint family
4thDomestic peace, the home, emotional security
5thRomance, courtship, children, affection
7thThe spouse, the partnership itself, legal marriage
8thLongevity of the marriage, in-laws' resources, the private and transformative side
12thThe bed, intimacy, expenses, foreign settlement after marriage

Reading the 7th house properly

The 7th house is the primary indicator, but the house alone says little. Four things must be read together: the sign on the 7th, any planets sitting in it, the position and strength of the 7th lord, and the planets aspecting it. A 7th house with no planets is not a problem — most charts have one. The condition of the 7th lord matters far more.

Then confirm everything in the Navamsa (D9). The rasi chart shows the shape of the marriage; the D9 shows whether it holds.

The houses people forget

The 2nd house decides whether a marriage feels prosperous and whether the wider family is a support or a strain — a factor Indian marriages live with daily. The 12th house governs the private life of a couple and, in many charts, marriage or settlement abroad. The 8th carries the durability of the bond and the handling of shared money.

The 5th is worth attention where a couple is anxious about children or where the courtship phase keeps stalling. Its relationship with the 7th often explains why affection exists but commitment does not follow.

How this is used in a consultation

I read the six houses in both charts side by side, then check where the two charts overlay — whose planets fall in whose 7th, 2nd and 12th. That overlay usually explains the day-to-day texture of a marriage better than the guna score does.

Frequently asked questions

Which house is for marriage in a kundli?

The 7th house, along with its lord and Venus, is the main indicator of marriage and the spouse. The Navamsa (D9) chart is used to confirm it.

What does the 8th house mean in marriage?

The 8th house covers intimacy, shared and in-law finances, and the endurance of the bond through difficult phases. It is a house of depth, not simply of trouble.

What is Upapada Lagna?

Upapada Lagna is a Jaimini point derived from the 12th house from the ascendant lord; it describes the marriage and the spouse as an independent cross-check on the 7th house.
